November 6, 2009 MeetingBoard Votes to Seek Same Public School Funding as 2010; Not Ask for Additional Funding to Cover Expected Growth In light of continued problematic economic times, the Utah State Board of Education voted to ask the 2010 general session of the Utah Legislature for the same $2,497,199,956 in funding for the 2011 fiscal year that it received for public education in the current fiscal year. The net effect of such a status quo budget, however, will be a 2.6 percent decrease because of an anticipated 2.6 percent enrollment growth in 2011. Teacher Curriculum Material Sharing Rule Approved The Utah State Board of Education gave final approval to a new rule that provides standards for the sharing of curriculum materials and lesson plans that teachers have generated. K-2 Social Studies Curriculum Revisions Advance The Utah State Board of Education gave its approval for suggested revisions to the core curriculum for K-2 social studies to go out for public comment. Board Approves Consent Calendar The Utah State Board of Education approved the consent calendar with some amendments to the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind School rule.

The Utah State Board of Education honored members of the Granite District New Teacher Support Team for their work in designing support programs for new teachers who came to the profession through alternative routes to licensure. The Board also honored the Nebo School District Mentor Program in which 83 mentors help support 400 other teachers in the district. Keeping teachers in the profession has proven to be a challenge for many school districts across the country. The Board sought to honor programs aimed at keeping more teachers in the profession..
